SRDC Around the Diaspora

Jamaica (2009)

SRDC visited Jamaica in 2009 as the organization’s outreach continued in the mission to establish cooperative agreements with Afrikan-Descendant organizations and communities throughout the Diaspora.

Costa Rica and Central America (2010)

An SRDC delegation traveled to Costa Rica in Central America to officially establish a cooperative relationship with the Central American Black Organization (CABO), or Organizacion Negra Centroamericana (ONECA) in Spanish.  The Central American Black Organization is a coalition of Afrodescendant organizations from Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, including Women’s and Garifuna organizations.

Cuba (2011)

Nova Scotia and Africville (2011)

In 2011, an SRDC delegation visited Hallifax, Nova Scotia, where many Afrikans who had escaped slavery in the United States had fled to establish a community outside the United States.  The settlement of Africville was the subject of several articles, one of which was written by SRDC International Facilitator Professor David Horne.  A Town Hall Meeting was held, and an SRDC organization was tentatively established there.  That chapter has currently gone inactive, no doubt due to the geographical isolation of that community, but we hope to re-establish our connection there in the coming years.

Liberia (2018)

An SRDC delegation visited Liberia in 2018 to pave the way for the Liberia Library Project, which will build the first public library in Liberia’s history.  It will also serve the nearby countries of Guinea-Conakry, Sierra Leone and Cote D’Ivoire.  A team of engineers, architects, designers and library scientists is being convened to organize site trips to the proposed site for the library in Monrovia.  The SRDC delegation, which included Professor David Horne (SRDC International Facilitator), Baba Kumasi Palmer (South Carolina Facilitator), Mama Deborah Wright and Baba Fred Lincoln, was welcomed by Liberian officials and participated in a community celebration.  The pictures include the prospective location of the library when it is constructed.
